Young Engin'uity
SAMPLE PROGRAMS:
Explore Engineering I/II: Led by a real engineer, students complete innovative hands-on activities to explore the many fields of engineering. We construct a bridge and roller coaster, devise a water distribution system, experiment with circuits and simple machines, dabble in inventions, and practice basic drafting and design skills.
Super Silly Science Surprise: A fun introduction to science for preschoolers. We do bubbles, colors, light, sound, nature, and even prepare scientific snacks. The emphasis is on using our senses and developing fine motor skills to experience the science around us.
Time Travelers: From Florence to Philly, we travel through five centuries and thousands of miles to explore the life and times of Da Vinci, Galileo, Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Edison. We do experiments and crafts to replicate the amazing scientific discoveries and inventions of these pioneers.
BYOB: Bring Your Own Body! Our body is a thrilling example of applied engineering and science. Students investigate the design of the human body by constructing a robotic arm, model lung and spine, using real stethoscopes, blood typing with synthetic blood, experimenting with optical illusions and testing their senses. We also include lessons and activities on nutrition and first aid.
The Sound of Science: For kids who love music and science, we will explore the science behind how sound is made and how sound travels. We will "see" our own voices using oscillo ("silly") scopes. We transform ordinary household stuff into musical instruments and prepare a short performance.
In Control: A fun way to show real-life applications of math and engineering. Using a variety of consumer products, young engineers devise quality control measures and test methods to determine whether their products "pass" or "fail." We also do some Froot Loop graphing.
Nursery Rhyme Science: We build on early literacy skills by taking classic rhymes such as Jack and Jill, Little Miss Muffet and Hey Diddle Diddle and incorporate hands-on experiments and games with gravity, spiders, the moon, and much more.
Spooky Science: In this Halloween favorite, our mad scientists will make paper bleed, make a balloon scream, spin a spiders web, and concoct artificial blood using edible materials.
Lost in Space: We learn the names and order of all the planets (and Pluto!). We do crafts and activities to learn about the phases of the moon and constellations. We plan a mission to Mars, design a life-sized spacesuit, and do experiments in thrust and parallax.
Our program library includes HUNDREDS of activities in engineering, environmental science, chemistry, physics, anatomy, ecology, geology, meteorology, and astronomy. We select and modify the program activities to fit the age and interest level of the students. We can customize them to complement or supplement your specific curriculum. We typically include a take-home craft.
For churches, Christian preschools, and synagogues, we would be pleased to help you integrate Biblical themes into our science workshops.
